You’ve heard of Mungo and Menindee, but have you been there? Neither have we! So why not join Peter Eastway and Ignacio Palacios on a workshop of discovery and learn how finding and capturing photos really happens…

On many workshops, the locations are decided ahead of time: you just turn up when you’re told and take your photos. However, how did the instructors work out where to shoot? What are they looking for? And what happens when you venture out on your own searching for photos – what skill sets are you missing?

This is why we’re suggesting you join Peter and Ignacio on a workshop of ‘discovery’.

We know the locations are good. We know how to take great photos. We’ve organised the accommodation and a light plane.

And Peter has some new dad jokes, Ignacio has his earplugs. All you will need to organise is your own 4WD vehicle to get to the locations (we can help you team up with other participants) and pay for your own food and drinks (travel and food are not included in the price, so you can order champagne and lobster at the Mungo Hilton if you want to).

So, where did the photos above come from? iStock and they cost Ignacio a fortune. That’s why we’re keen to go so next time we can use our own photos!

Interested? Check out the itinerary below and come along!

Itinerary is subject to change.

Note: You will need your own car or hire car to join this photography workshop. If you are flying to Broken Hill or Mildura, you can usually rent a car or 4WD that you can share with other participants. We can help put you in touch with other participants. Please bring for an extra tyre as roads might be rough. If you are flying from Sydney to BH or from Melbourne to Mildura, please let us know in advance of your arrival time. We suggest you arrive the day before.

Day 1. 30 May. Broken Hill and Menindee Lakes
Full day at Broken Hill.
The group will gather at 9 a.m. for breakfast, presentations and introductions.
PowerPoint presentation on composition by Ignacio Palacios.
A discussion of landscape basics by Peter, from capture to post-production (we’ll let the group decide what level they’d like this pitched at).
After a good lunch we will drive to Menindee Lakes (about 1 ½ hr) for a sunset shot. Sunset is around 5p.m, so shooting until 5.30 p.m. or so. Back to BH – and possibly after the restaurants have closed (hence the good lunch, so we’ll find supper somewhere).
Staying at The Palace Hotel Broken Hill, so a location full of character and hopefully not too much music. Why the Palace? Ask Ignacio!

Day 2. 31 May. Menindee Lakes
Broken Hill to Menindee Lakes for Sunrise shot.
Up early again! Drive back to Menindee Lakes for the early morning light. It’s not too bad - sunrise is around 7 a.m., so first light 6.30 a.m, leave BH at 5 a.m.
Back to Broken Hill for a late brunch and free time. After lunch, there’s a processing session with Ignacio and Peter, then a sunset shot at the Sculpture Park or perhaps Silverton. Staying at The Palace Hotel Broken Hill

Day 3. 1st June. Mungo National Park
Morning and Afternoon Shoots
We get to sleep in a bit - up at 6.00 am to drive to either Silverton or the Sculpture Park for an early morning shoot. After breakfast, we drive from Broken Hill to Mungo National Park (4 ½ hours). Hotel check-in. Sunset at Mungo. Staying Mungo Lodge.

Day 4. 2nd June. Mungo National Park
Aerial flights
Aerial photography in the morning. Editing/critique session and presentations during the day. Sunset shoot at Mungo. Optional: Shoot stars at night. Staying at Mungo Lodge.

Day 5. 3rd June. Mungo National Park.
Great wall and big sand dune+ Perry Red Sand Dunes
Sunrise shots at Mungo National Park (Great Wall and Big Sand Dune). If we have time and there are no travel restrictions with Victoria, we will drive to Perry Red Sandhills dunes (2 hours) and explore. Overnight in Mildura.

Day 6. 4th June
Mildura back home
Breakfast with the group, feedback and back home.
