Print Photographer of the Year winning photograph by Frances Suter

Winners and finalists of the third annual Australian Photographic Prize (APP) have been announced following the three-day live judging event at Photography Studies College, Melbourne.

Sydney-based professional sports photographer, Andy Cheung, was named Digital Photographer of the Year with his black and white capture of Rafael Nadal sharing an intimate on-court moment with a common cabbage moth at the Australian Open.

Queensland based wedding and portrait photographer, Frances Suter, won the overall Print Photographer of the Year with a striking wintry landscape image.

Both overall winners receive a $5000 Nikon voucher. There were 1924 entries from 570 entrants across 12 countries. With a combination of traditionally printed, digital, and non-traditional 3D photographic art pieces, APP is the last photographic competition of its kind in Australia – and one of few remaining globally – that accepts both printed and digital photographs.

The event welcomed 35 experienced judges from around Australia and New Zealand. A panel of 5 independently scores each entry to determine a single final majority score. APP’s Digital Division includes Single Capture (Nature, Life Events, Wildlife), Professional (Aerial, Commercial, Family, Landscape) and Creative (Pet and Animal, Portrait, Creative) sub-divisions. All digital entries are pre-judged with the top 35 from each division judged live and livestreamed on YouTube. At time of release, livestreamed judging has received over 4100 views.

All printed entries received are judged. The Print category includes People, Places, Illustrative and Visionary sub-categories. Two additional prizes are offered: the Photographic Artist Award, specifically for composite photography, and the Steve Scalone Urban Architecture, to celebrate the life and legacy of commercial and fine art photographer of the same name. Over $1600 was raised on Steve’s behalf for the Victorian Cancer Council.

APP major sponsors include Nikon, Kayell, Canson, Godox, Eizo and Ilford.
