Warwick Williams from Fujifilm turned up at the magazine this week with a Fujifilm GFX100. Demand for the new camera is so high, they don't have 'loaner' cameras just yet and so I was treated to a short play and a cup of coffee!

I guess Warwick will be happy to hear I was disappointed - disappointed I couldn't keep the camera for longer. It was hard to believe that every time I pressed the shutter, I was recording a 100-megapixel file. Everything was so effortless - it was not much different to using my Fujifilm X-T3.

The GFX100 isn't that much bigger or heavier than a professional DSLR. The body is 1400 g including viewfinder, battery and memory cards. In comparison, a Canon EOS-1D X Mark II weighs 1530 g and the Nikon D5 around 1415 g. Granted, these pro DSLRs are heavier than a Canon EOS RP at 485 g or a Nikon Z7 at 675 g, but this is a mirrorless medium format camera!

There is a full review of the Fujifilm GFX100 in the next issue of Better Photography (out 1 September), but in a nutshell, here are the takeaways. The camera is a snack to use, it has image stabilisation that allows you to shoot long telephotos hand-held and still capture razor sharp images and the autofocus lens quality is stellar. A kit with a couple of lenses will set you back around $21k, which means it's a lot more than some cameras, but a whole lot less than some other medium format cameras!

We know this isn't the camera for everyone - it's still expensive. On the other hand, if you're looking for the next challenge in photography, then just maybe the GFX100 is worth a closer look. If you can find one - I'm told they are on back-order.
