Mike Hankey,87, Creative Flair Better Photography Magazine Photograph of the Year Competition 2015
I think it is fair enough to assume Mike Hankey has created this image in post-production, and I'm also pretty sure there will be no complaints about his handiwork from the purists, given it is a 'Creative Flair' entry!
Starting off with a blank canvas can be quite challenging for photographers and while I see many composite images, too few of them have had sufficient time spent creating a strong or considered composition. When you think about it, every composite photograph should have strong composition because the photographer is not relying on nature to provide it, rather his or her imagination!
Mike's photograph demonstrates excellent composition, with a left to right reading. The small leaves to some extent complete the outline of the missing leaf, but then spiral away with the winds. I also like the three little leaves off to the right - a nice punctuation mark.
Note also the simplicity. The background is just sky and clouds, with muted colours and soft edges which make an ideal backdrop for the sharply focused leaves. The judges also scored the image highly for its conceptual side - the way the image can be employed to tell a number of stories.
Request: I am interested in critiquing reader's photographs in this blog. The critique will be anonymous (unless you request me to credit you, of course) and will be written with the best of intentions for both the photographer and the wider audience. If you're thick skinned enough to take a little constructive criticism, shoot me through a JPEG, 2000 pixels on the longest edge, to email@example.com. I will be selecting images which allow me to write something of interest, so if your photograph is really good, there's a good chance I won't use it for a critique because there's nothing to say!
Last month, Peter Eastway judged and presented at the WPPI Convention in Las Vegas, USA. At the show, he offered attendees the opportunity to purchase the Landscape Photography MasterClass with a massive 25% discount. We're told that at shows like this, you have to make a strong offer!
This got Peter thinking - well, why offer it to only the new people he meets at WPPI? Why not to our existing readers and so here's the announcement!
You're all invited to take advantage of the special WPPI offer. There's 25% off the Landscape Photography MasterClass, the Photoshop Layers ebooks, How to Win Photo Competitions ebook, and the Photo Business ebooks and business plan.
All you need to do is use the code 'WPPI2016' when you check out, the offer has been extended until 31 March 2016.
