The CamRanger is a remote control that connects to selected Canon and Nikon DLSR cameras with a USB cable. It creates an ad-hoc WiFi network that your device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, or Mac or Windows computer) can then connect to.
The free CamRanger app then enables control of the camera from your iPad, iPhone etcetera. There is no need for a computer or existing internet connection. CamRanger operates on a rechargeable, replaceable battery. Battery life varies, but five to six hours is typical. The unit can be charged and powered via a USB charging cable and US AC adapter.
The wireless network enables connections up to 50 metres, while slow connections can be maintained at up to twice this distance. Essentially, the CamRanger streams your camera’s Live View to your iPad, iPhone, etcetera. Operation is intuitive, such as double tapping to increase magnification. And you can set most of the camera’s features (depending on the camera model), including shutter speed, aperture, metering mode, drive/shooting mode, white balance, image format, focus mode (Nikon only), auto exposure mode (Nikon only), exposure compensation and bracketing.
