Peter Eastway and David Oliver have teamed up yet again to produce a wonderful photography book. Titled Away: The Art of Travel Photography, the book features images from around the globe. Take a look at the preview book reproduced here and see what you think!
Following the sell-out success of their first book six years ago, also titled Away, the two AIPP Grand Masters of Photography felt it was time to do a follow up with a new body of work. So much had changed since 2003. They'd gained a few grey hairs (Peter thought he would be completely bald before he went grey), they’ve visited some amazing destinations (one of the perks of speaking internationally or owning a magazine), and they’re now both ‘on the dark side’ (for David to finally shoot digitally is more important than the discovery of film itself).
Perhaps the most amazing thing about travel photography is that two photographers can visit the same location and come home with completely different images. Everyone adds their own interpretation, outlook and style to their photography, so if you were to visit some of the locations in this book, you too would return with something unique.
Expression through photography is the most important creative art form of the 20th and 21st centuries and many people express themselves through travel photography. David and Peter certainly do and they claim to be no different to you when they travel to somewhere new. "It’s exciting, even exhilarating and when we drive off into a strange land, our eyes are wide open, searching.
"Some travellers look for a hotel, some for a restaurant, but photographers search for pictures. We’re not so interested in dinner, guided tours or souvenirs, rather we want to find amazing locations, people full of character and wonderful light. And, with a camera in hand, we have a built-in excuse to go places and be curious.
"We used to worry about being looked upon as ‘tourists’. We wanted to blend in and be thought of as ‘locals’. Now we find being a tourist opens many more doors because people know that tourists leave only footprints and take only photographs. We’re harmless.
"We live in an ideal time to be travel photographers. We can go places so easily and in such comfort, and with digital photography we can edit our images and create a story that lets us express what we discovered, what we experienced, and what we felt."
